Genealogy – Locating And Using The Many Genealogy Resources Available

Now that you have started the genealogy research, you are probably thinking where to start and which are the right genealogy resources for you to follow. There are actually many different resources for those people who are trying to locate their families around the world, or who are trying to find their family lineage and background. In this article, you will find information on various resources that are available for your purpose to make a good decision about which one should work for you.

Newspaper Periodicals:

Newspapers are not available free of cost. The best way to use their services is through subscription to the website of the periodical you wish to peruse. The genealogy searches on the internet are comparatively new and revolutionary in their approach. Earlier, if people wanted to know about their genealogy, they would go to public libraries and manually and painstakingly go through every single record to get the relevant document or detail. This search might even mean having to travel for many miles to reach a single document. But today, things are different. You can avail of the periodicals on the internet.

Especially if your ancestors featured in the newspapers in anyway, you can expect to find something in the newspapers about them. Personal details like obituaries, property sale purchase, birth announcements, death announcements, wedding announcements etc are found in periodicals.

Once you have completed four or more generations, you will want a chart to display your findings. There are a number of different designs to choose from. You will find the charts for sale at websites providing genealogy supplies. Some software packages include them, too. Some charts are specifically for recording an individual’s descendants. Those are referred to as descendant trees. Other charts are referred to as pedigree charts. They are used to record an individual’s ancestors.

You can find the origin of many common surnames just by doing a simple online search. Some software packages include information about origins, family crests, coats of arms and other “fun facts”. With the latest genealogy supplies, you can trace your roots and display your findings. Let’s help future generations by doing the hard work for them

A Must Read – Genealogy Records

Starting a genealogy research is relative easy to start off. One needs to work from the present backwards, and just begin by talking to immediate relatives to initially establish kinship. Birth and death records kept within an extended family would also have to be consulted and copied to start off compiling genealogy records.

Establishing a family history and filling in missing gaps in genealogy records become more challenging as the genealogist digger deeper backwards in years. The search needs to extend to external sources such as government and church archives containing records not only of births and deaths but also marriage or divorce records, adoption records, as well as records of emigration or immigration and naturalization, military records, court records, to name a few.

One reason why have a good read about your long lost grandfather, is it is a way of self reflection and self understanding. Their is a little bit of your ancestors in you, they shaped part of who you are today so it pays to find out just who they were and what their lives were like.

They may well have travelled many miles to get to the land you now call home and take for granted. Genealogy books and uncover all this for you.

The history of our ancestors in a way defines our present so that the better understanding we have of our past better prepares us for the future.

To give you an example, your surname has gone through a bewildering array of marital exchanges which ended up eventually at you. It is interesting to find out how surnames have changed over the years. At certain dates in American history some surnames changed completely.

This is because immigrants with surnames that the Americans could not pronounce simply altered or completely renamed them. Another fascinating fact found in books is the fact that the names like Baker, Potter, Tanner are often rooted in what our ancestors’ did for a living. So you can look up your family name and discover if there was any connection to a job of some sort.

If you intend to take parts of a family tree already present on the internet, you must ensure that there is no duplication of people. This happens because you may already have a few people in your family tree who are also on the incoming branch. Some popular genealogy software can check for duplication but it is always advisable to do a manual check just to be sure.

A word of caution: always validate the information that you get from unofficial or less credible sources to ensure accuracy of your research!.

The more reliable ones would be government databases such as the US Federal Land Patent Records. This site contains land conveyance records for the for the Public Land States . It also carries more than 2 million Federal land titles obtained between 1820 and 1908 from Florida, Illinois, Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri, Minnesota,Arkansas, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. Another rich lode of genealogy records WorldGenWeb containing genealogy data from all over the globe, a rare compilation and a must read for genealogists whether a hobbyist or professional.
